Using OpenIntern
Word
In Word, OpenIntern writes and revises memos, reports, letters and one-pagers with Word's own styles, and works through review comments and tracked changes.
What you can ask for
Writing and revising
Documents use built-in heading styles, tables, captions, footnotes, a table of contents, headers and footers, and page numbers, so they behave like documents you formatted yourself. It fills templates in place, and revises existing text without changing figures or meaning when you ask it not to.
- "Draft the investment memo from the model."
- "Draft a one-page board memo on 2025 vs 2024 store performance, with headings for summary, findings, drivers and recommendations, and a store comparison table with a caption."
- "Write a three-section report with a table of contents, a footnote citing the management accounts on the first figure, and page numbers."
- "Tighten the wording of this memo without changing its meaning or any figure."
Comments and tracked changes
It reads comment threads and replies on each one, and reads, accepts or rejects tracked changes. In Word the composer has a Track changes switch: turn it on and its edits are made as tracked changes, so you can accept or reject each one in Word.
- "Work through Sam's comments and reply on each thread."
- "Summarise the tracked changes in this draft."
Your document style
Under More (⋯) > Instructions > Conventions you can set a house document style: body font and size, heading font and colour, table style, footer text and page numbers.
Figures linked to a workbook
In the local software, a figure written into a document from a workbook cell keeps a link to its source. Refreshing rewrites only the figures, keeps the paragraph's formatting, and makes the edit as a tracked change when Track changes is on. The store add-in works one document at a time, so there you paste or describe the figures, or attach a copy of the workbook.
How it checks its work
Before it finishes, a task's review pass reads the document back against your request: headings, tables, captions, footnotes and page numbers included. The answer lists what changed, paragraph by paragraph, and each row takes you to the paragraph or table it changed.
Limits
- Some changes cannot be undone: deleted paragraphs, inserted pictures and breaks, comments, and rows added to a table. Text, style, format, header and footer, and tracking changes can be undone, and added paragraphs and tables are removed. See Undo.
- Word on the web handles a few things differently, for example a caption's number is written as plain text there, so Word does not renumber it when you add or remove captions. See Office on the web.
- Read before you send. AI output can be wrong, especially figures. Check them against the source.
