Privacy and data

A plain summary of what happens to your key, your documents and your email address. The Privacy Policy is the full and binding version; if this page and the policy ever disagree, the policy applies.

The short version

  • OpenIntern is bring-your-own-key. Your AI provider receives what a task needs and bills you for it.
  • In the store add-in, document content passes through our service on its way to your provider, and your key is stored only on your device. In the local software, nothing passes through us at all.
  • We do not sell your data, use it for advertising, or use your documents to train AI models. The add-in has no analytics, telemetry or ads, and the website sets no cookies.

In the store add-in

  • Your key is saved in the add-in's storage on your device. It is sent over HTTPS with each request to app.openintern.ai, held in memory while the task runs, and never written to a database, file or log. See Where your key is kept.
  • Your documents and conversation. To do a task, the pane sends our service your request and the parts of your open document the task needs, such as cell values and formulas, slide text and images, paragraphs and chart images, plus files you attach and instructions you save. Our service works on them in memory and in a temporary workspace for your pane session only.
  • Deleted when the session ends. A session and everything in its workspace is deleted after 30 minutes with no activity, and whenever the service restarts or is updated. We keep no task history or document copies after that. The workspace is protected by access controls but not separately encrypted.
  • On your device, the pane keeps your key, conversation, unsent draft, model choice, preferences and any thumbs-up or thumbs-down ratings. Ratings are not sent to us. Removing the add-in or clearing Office's add-in cache deletes them.
  • Technical data. Cloudflare, which hosts the service, processes your IP address to deliver it and protect it from abuse, and our service uses it in memory for rate limits. Operational logs never contain your key or the content of your requests, but can contain session and task identifiers, the names of documents a session opens, and error messages.

In the local software

  • The pane talks only to the OpenIntern server on your own computer, over https://localhost. We never see your key, your documents or your prompts.
  • Keys are saved in ~/.openintern/credentials.json, readable only by your user account, or read from environment variables.
  • Conversations, records of changes (which make undo work), checkpoints, attachments, preferences, instructions and error logs are kept in ~/.openintern. Delete the folder to remove all of it. Task records can be turned off with OPENINTERN_PERSIST_TASKS=0, and checkpoints under Instructions > Permissions.
  • With a local model, your content stays on your computer. With no-egress mode on, only a local model can be used.

What your AI provider receives

Your request, the document content the task needs, files you attach, your saved instructions and the results of the tools the agent uses. The provider handles this under its own terms and privacy policy, which you accepted when you created your key; its retention and training practices are its own. When OpenIntern calls OpenAI's Responses API, it asks OpenAI not to store the response.

Optional services receive only what is needed to use them: Exa receives search queries and web addresses when you add an Exa key, and in the local software, SEC EDGAR and any MCP servers you configure receive their requests.

On this website

If you join the waitlist we store your email address and when you signed up, confirmed or unsubscribed. We send one email asking you to confirm, then a welcome email, one email when OpenIntern is released and occasional major updates, at most monthly. Every email after confirmation has a one-click unsubscribe link. The site sets no cookies and runs no analytics. Fonts load from Google Fonts, which receives your IP address.

Accounts

There are no OpenIntern accounts today. The planned free account would save an encrypted key, settings and conversations, each of which you can opt out of; the Privacy Policy will be updated before it launches. See Accounts (coming).

Your choices

  • Remove your key under More (⋯) > Providers > Remove, and revoke it at your provider.
  • Remove the add-in or clear Office's add-in cache to delete what the pane keeps on your device. For the local software, delete ~/.openintern.
  • Unsubscribe from waitlist emails with the link in any email.
  • Ask privacy@openintern.ai to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you. We answer within 30 days.
