OpenIntern documentation
OpenIntern is an AI agent that works inside Excel, PowerPoint and Word. You describe the outcome you want, and it reads what it needs from the open file, plans the work, makes the changes, checks them and lists what it changed. The result is the workbook, deck or document. The chat in the pane is how you steer it.
OpenIntern is pre-release. As of 28 October 2026 the store add-in is in final testing and is not yet listed in Microsoft's store, and the open-source software has no installer yet. Join the waitlist to hear when each is out. These pages describe how both work, and mark what is planned rather than available.
What it does
- Excel: builds models and analysis with live formulas, cleans messy data, formats to your house style, and traces errors back to the cell that caused them.
- PowerPoint: builds decks from your numbers in your template, with native charts and tables, and edits existing decks without losing content.
- Word: writes memos and reports with real heading styles, tables, captions and a contents page, and works through comments and tracked changes.
Before it says a task is done, it checks its work: totals tie, nothing it built shows an error value, slides are rendered and inspected. Every change is recorded so you can review it and undo the task. See Control and safety.
OpenIntern is free and open source under the Apache License 2.0. You bring your own key from an AI provider such as OpenAI or Anthropic, and the provider bills you for what your tasks use.
Two ways to run it
The pane looks and works the same in both. What differs is where the agent runs and where your key is kept.
| Store add-in | Local software | |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | From Microsoft's add-in store, or deployed by your Microsoft 365 administrator | Installed on your Mac from the open-source release |
| Where the agent runs | Our hosted service at app.openintern.ai | A small OpenIntern server on your own computer |
| Where your key is kept | In the add-in's storage on your device, sent with each request and never stored by us | In a file in your home folder, readable only by your user account |
| Where your documents go | Through our service to the AI provider you chose; the session is deleted after 30 minutes without activity | Straight from your computer to the AI provider you chose |
| Providers | 13 providers with a fixed public address, including OpenAI and Anthropic | All of those, plus Azure OpenAI, local models (Ollama, LM Studio) and any OpenAI-compatible endpoint |
| Extras | Exa web search | Exa web search, MCP connectors, file checkpoints, one conversation across your open documents |
| Platforms | Microsoft 365 on Windows and Mac, and Office on the web; Windows and the web are still in testing | Mac, tested in the real Excel, PowerPoint and Word |
If you want your key and your documents never to pass through anyone else's server, use the local software. If you want to start without installing anything, use the store add-in.
