When you write, tell us the application (Excel, PowerPoint or Word), your platform (Windows, Mac or the web) and Office version (in Office: File > Account or Excel/PowerPoint/Word > About), the AI provider and model you picked, and what happened. Never send your API key, and leave out confidential document content.
Get started
- Add OpenIntern. In Excel, PowerPoint or Word, open Add-ins on the Home tab (or Insert > Get Add-ins), search for OpenIntern and choose Add. A Microsoft 365 administrator can also deploy it to an organisation from the Microsoft 365 admin center (Integrated apps).
- Open the pane. On the Home tab choose Open OpenIntern.
- Add your API key. In the pane choose ⋯ (More) > Providers. Pick OpenAI or Anthropic, paste your key, choose Save, then Test connection, then Back. Get a key at platform.openai.com/api-keys or console.anthropic.com/settings/keys. Your provider bills you for what your tasks use. The key is kept only on your device (how keys are handled).
- Ask for an outcome. For example: "Add a Summary sheet with revenue and margin by store, with formulas and a chart", "Turn these figures into a five-slide board update", or "Draft a one-page memo on these results with a table".
The pane shows the plan and each step while it works. Large or destructive changes ask for your approval. When a task finishes, the answer lists what changed, and Undo changes reverses the task.
Troubleshooting
The pane is blank or says it can't connect. Check your internet connection, close the pane and open it again from the Home tab. If it still fails, check that your network allows https://app.openintern.ai. The service may take a few seconds to start after a quiet period.
"Test connection" fails, or a task says the provider rejected the key. Check the key in your provider's console: that it is active, that billing is set up, and that your account can use the selected model. Paste the key again under Providers and choose Save.
"Rate limited" or "quota exceeded". These limits come from your AI provider. Wait a minute, or raise the limit in your provider's console. Our service also limits very high request rates from one address.
A task stopped part-way. Sessions end after 30 minutes without activity and when the service is updated, which stops any task running at that moment. The pane reconnects by itself. Check the list of changes under the answer, use Undo changes if you want to go back, and run the task again.
Undo didn't restore everything. Undo restores the cells, slides and paragraphs the task changed. It is not a byte-for-byte restore of the file, it won't overwrite edits you or a co-author made afterwards, and the answer says if a change could not be undone. Keep your own backups of files that matter.
The pane says it needs a newer version of Office. OpenIntern needs a current version of Microsoft 365 on Windows or Mac, or Office on the web. Update Office and open the pane again.
Remove OpenIntern and your key. In the pane choose ⋯ > Providers > Remove to delete your key from this device, and revoke it at your provider. Then remove the add-in from Add-ins > My Add-ins.
Platform status
- Mac: Excel, PowerPoint and Word tested in the real apps with the open-source software. The hosted add-in is in final testing.
- Windows and Office on the web: in testing before the store release.
- iPad and phones: not supported.
Known limitations
- The add-in works one document at a time. Each Excel, PowerPoint or Word window has its own session, so the add-in cannot read a workbook while writing a deck in another window. Paste or describe the figures you need, or use the local software, which can work across your open files.
- Local models and connectors (Ollama, LM Studio, MCP servers) are available only in the open-source software running on your own Mac.
- Model quality varies. Current OpenAI and Anthropic models are the ones we test. Other providers can be added under Providers; results vary.
- Output can be wrong. Review figures, formulas and text before you rely on them.
Running OpenIntern on your own Mac
OpenIntern is open source (Apache-2.0). The open-source version runs entirely on your Mac: your key is stored on your computer and requests go straight to your AI provider, with no OpenIntern servers involved. Installation instructions come with the open-source release; join the waitlist to hear when it is out.
Reporting harmful output
If OpenIntern produces offensive, harmful or dangerously wrong output, email report@openintern.ai with the date, the application, the model, what you asked and what it produced. We acknowledge reports within two business days. The thumbs-down button in the pane records your rating on your device only, so please email us too. See the Acceptable Use Policy.
